ALIVENESS
“Rather than finding heaven on earth, I think we are asked to release heaven by living on earth.” –Mark Nepo
So, what is this living, this “aliveness” One definition I like is “full of energy and spirit; lively; vivid; vibrant.” So many writers address this important subject, not to freeze it in icy definitions, but to help us to access and expand our own sense of aliveness. A few of my favorite inspiring quotations about aliveness follow.
Here’s an all-time favorite of mine, from famous dancer, Martha Graham. “There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open … You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you.”
And anthropologist, Joseph Campbell, “People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive. . .so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.
And poet-philosopher Nepo, “The life of expression is the tuning fork by which we find our way to the sacred.” And what matters is “our ability to let our talents flow through us.”
